How did hustle culture become so ingrained in our lives? We rarely take breaks and when we do, we find ourselves feeling bad about it. For us, seeing what everyone else is doing all the time makes us feel like we need to keep up. Like even with drinking. We can feel so sure about a simple drink and then see someone making an elaborate cocktail and think, “what’s a few extra steps?” –Not cool. So here we are, taking a step back and turning to the Italian way of keeping life semplice with this classic aperitivo drink.
The Bicicletta originated in Lombardia in northwest Italy in the 1930s. It’s a classic drink that was a staple of Allie’s Italian upbringing and a reminder that sometimes the best things in life are the most simple ones. It’s just 3 ingredients– Campari, white wine and soda water. I guess 4 ingredients if you count the lemon garnish, which in our opinion should never be omitted.
In Italian, Bicicletta means bicycle. The drink got its name for the mode of transportation in which drinkers would swerve on home after several drinks at the local café. It’s almost exclusively consumed with Campari everywhere except Brescia.
This drink is simple, refreshing, and perfect for summertime sipping. The best part? You probably already have the ingredients for this low-alcohol bevvy in your fridge and home bar, and you won’t need to get a cocktail shaker dirty in the process. Cin-cin to that!
This recipe is for two, but it will also scale well into a pitcher for your summer soirées. Because really, what’s better than sharing a gorgeous, simple drink that embodies the whole spritz philosophy– beautiful and easy.
