And as it always is, it’s been a season of drama, passion, and a whole lot of flair. If you’re lucky enough to have a Leo friend (or, if you’re really lucky, Leo in-laws like me), you know exactly what I’m talking about. To help you refresh and stay cool during this fiery season, we’ve created the ultimate Leo-approved cocktail: the Smoky Tomato Basil Leorita. This refreshing margarita is the perfect antidote to all the heated moments of the season. It’s tangy, smoky, and salty – a delicious combination that will cool you down and celebrate the end of summer.

Smoky Tomato Basil Leo-rita

A refreshing Leo-approved smoky, tangy, slightly salty margarita

Equipment

  • 1 Cocktail shaker

Ingredients

  • 1 beefsteak tomato juiced
  • 1 oz maple syrup
  • 2 oz lime juice
  • 1 handful basil leaves
  • 2 oz mezcal
  • pinch sea salt
  • 3 mini orange tomatoes for garnish

Instructions

  • Rim your glass with tajin and place in freezer to chill.
  • Juice tomato by grating it into a bowl and then straining 4oz of tomato juice into the shaker with a mesh sieve and back of a spoon.
  • Clap basil leaves to release oils and add with maple syrup to the cocktail shaker. Using a muddler or back of a bar spoon, press down and stir well. Mix in lime juice, mezcal and small pinch of sea salt. Add ice and shake for at least 30 seconds.
  • Add a large sphere of ice to your chilled glass. Strain in drink and garnish with mini tomatoes.
